Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your vacation to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

We continue to search out accommodation that is suitable for our travelers, while also finding properties that are making concerted efforts to reduce their environmental impact. We include properties that have water-saving measures in place, use renewable energy sources, and are built to complement their surroundings. This trip includes a stay at the Savaneti Hotel near Telavi, Georgia. The Savaneti Hotel is committed to limiting their environmental impact and has in place water and energy reduction initiatives, water conservation programs, supply chain policies and recycling processes. They encourage guests to reuse their towels and linens and say no to daily room servicing to limit water and electricity usage.

Where possible we choose to travel by land rather than air. By minimizing the use of flights on our trips, we are making journeys more stimulating and more sustainable for travelers. This trip through Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia does not include any flights, providing all transport by road. We ensure our vehicles are fuel-efficient and well maintained with regular servicing. We use vehicles that are an appropriate size to suit the group size. For example, we wouldn’t use a 16-seater van if we only had five people traveling with us. We optimize our driving routes to reduce travel time and our carbon footprint, and we turn the engine off when travelers are visiting a site and not in the vehicle.

People

Our trips maximize the opportunity for travelers to engage meaningfully with local culture and communities. Many experiences on our trips also support traditional cultural practices – whether artisanal, culinary or otherwise. In turn, this helps to sustain and preserve these traditional practices so that future generations may continue to learn, enjoy and benefit from them. This trip includes a visit to Ikorta, a jewellery-making social enterprise in the Tserovani IDP Settlement. Ikorta is an enamel workshop that creates employment and training opportunities for primarily refugee women living in the settlement. Travelers will meet the employees, hear about their former lives in the Tskhinvali region, see how they make their jewellery and have the opportunity to design a piece themselves.

The best folk to show you the heart of a destination are the ones that live there, which is why we work exclusively with local leaders. Our leaders are not only travel experts, they’re teachers, travel gurus and enthusiastic purveyors of grassroots experiences. They’ll just as easily steer you through the laneways of a city as help you strike up a conversation with the locals – and all with a smile. On this trip through Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia, travelers will also be joined by local guides in many of the cities and towns visited. In each location these guides will bring to life the destination, its history and what makes it special. There are also opportunities to meet local families, learn from them how to make yoghurt and bread before enjoying a meal with them.
